小樽オーク
先日、銀座の北欧ヴィンテージ家具を扱うお店で友人Mとフィンユールの家具を観た。Mはコピーライターの仕事をしているが、北欧家具の目利きでありコレクターでもある。
店を出て近くの定食屋でビールを飲みながら、一番好きな樹種はなにかという話になり、直前に見たフィンユールのテーブルの美しいチーク材の余韻が残っていたせいもあるが、私は不覚にもチーク材が一番好きだと言ってしまった。Mは真剣な表情で彼が一番好きなのは小樽オーク（北海道のミズナラ）だと言った。
もちろんチークは大好きな材料であるには違いないのだが、なぜ北海道のミズナラと言わなかったのか、いまでも後悔している。
数ヶ月経って、Mから文章が届いた。それをここに記す。
Otaru oak
The other day, I saw Finn Juhl's furniture with my friend M at a shop that sells Scandinavian vintage furniture in Ginza. M works as a copywriter, but is also a connoisseur and collector of Scandinavian furniture.
After leaving the store and drinking beer at a nearby restaurant, we talked about ｗｈｉｃｈ wood we liked the most. I inadvertently said that teak was my favorite, partly because the beautiful teak wood from the Finn Juhl table I had seen just before had left a lasting impression. With a serious expression, M said that his favorite was Otaru Oak (Hokkaido Mizunara).
Of course, teak must be my favorite material, but I still regret why I didn't say Hokkaido oak.
