春分の日もすぎて、いよいよ春がそこまで来ているような雰囲気ですが、まだまだ寒い北海道です。この時期のこの辺は特に風が強くて、体感としてはむしろ冬よりも寒いのでは無いかと思うほどです。

昨年は建築の仕事においても、ありがたいご縁をいただきました。自宅の近所に、いっしょに川を歩く友人である、カメラマンの萬田康文さんの自宅兼仕事場（飲食店舗=東カワウソ）の設計をさせていただきました。土地の取得から、資金計画、設計、施工まで、さまざまな幸運や偶然の巡り合わせを経て、昨年末にようやく完成しました。

北海道での建築設計は、極寒の寒さ対策、雪の落とし方（落とさない方法）、吹雪いた時の雪の降り方、吹き溜まりのでき方、効率的な雪かき、薪の保管場所、などなど、自然条件に対して考えなければならないことがたくさんあります。一方、東京では、狭い敷地での法律の制約、近隣の目線など、より社会的条件をクリアすることにかなりのエネルギーを使っていたように思います。どちらも面白い仕事ですが、北海道での設計は建築のより原始的（本質的）な部分に関われているような感覚があって、とても大きな喜びを感じています。まだまだ経験値の足りない未熟な設計者ですが、少しずつ上達できるよう精進していきたいと思っています。

Higashi Kawauso

The vernal equinox has passed, and it feels like spring is finally here, but it's still cold in Hokkaido. The wind is especially strong around here at this time of year, so much so that it actually feels colder than winter.

Last year, I was also blessed with some great connections in the field of architecture. Near my home, I designed the home and workplace (restaurant = Higashikawauso) for photographer Yasufumi Manda, a friend of mine who walks the river with me. After a variety of luck and coincidences, from acquiring the land to financial planning, design, and construction, the project was finally completed at the end of last year.

Architectural design in Hokkaido depends on nature, such as countermeasures against extremely cold temperatures, how to remove snow (how not to remove it), how snow falls during a blizzard, how snowdrifts form, efficient snow shoveling, where to store firewood, etc. There are many things to consider regarding the conditions. On the other hand, in Tokyo, I think a considerable amount of energy was spent on meeting more social conditions, such as legal restrictions on a small site and the perspective of neighbors. Both jobs are interesting, but designing in Hokkaido gives me the feeling of being involved in a more primitive (essential) part of architecture, which gives me great joy. Although I am still an inexperienced designer with insufficient experience, I would like to work hard to improve little by little.
