2月の観測史上最高気温を記録したかと思えば、今夜は真冬の寒さにもどりました。まだ春の気配は感じないものの、確実に日が延びています。北海道に移り住んでから、毎年雪は少なくなって、毎年寒い日が減っているように思います。気候変動を実感できるようになってしまったようです。

昨年は、はじめて自分でデザインした椅子を自らの手でつくることができました。小さなウィンザーチェアは、まだまだ試作段階で、こまかなところを詰めていかなければなりません。長年の念願であるチェアメーカー（椅子をつくる家具職人）になるための第一歩を踏み出せたように思います。

この椅子をつくるにあたって、イスワークス（山上木工）やウィンザーチェアで知られる札幌の木工家、高橋三太郎さんにスピンドル（丸棒）を角度をつけて取り付けるための穴を空ける方法を教えてもらいました。一見つくるのが難しそうに見える椅子ですが、17世紀ころから現在に至るまでたくさんの無名の職人によってつくられてきた椅子だけあって、とても単純で明快な考え方でつくられていることを学ばせてもらいました。三太郎さんのアトリエは、デザインとクラフトの交錯するような、家具工房として目指すべき理想的な空間でした。その空間には椅子への熱い情熱、デザインへの深い洞察、純粋な人柄を感じさせる澄んだ空気が漂っていました。

今年の6月のADWまでには最初のロットを生産したいと考えています。本年もどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

A happy New Year.
Just when we thought we had recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in February, tonight we returned to the coldness of mid-winter. Although it doesn't feel like spring yet, the days are definitely getting longer. Since I moved to Hokkaido, there seems to be less snow and fewer cold days every year. It seems like we can now feel climate change.

Last year, I was able to craft my own designed chair for the first time. The small Windsor chair is still in the prototype stage, so we still have to work out the details. I feel like I have taken the first step toward becoming a chair maker, which has been my long-cherished desire.

To make this chair, I asked Santaro Takahashi, a Sapporo woodworker known for Isuworks and the Windsor Chair, to teach me how to make a hole to attach a spindle at an angle.　　At first glance, this chair may seem difficult to make, but the chair has been made by many unknown craftsmen from the 17th century to the present, so I could learn that it is made using a very simple and clear concept. Santaro's atelier was an ideal space for a furniture studio, where design and craft intersect. The space was filled with a clear atmosphere that evoked a passionate passion for chairs, deep insight into design, and a genuine personality.
